After arriving at Hastings Station, we begin our walk towards Hastings Old Town, passing by quirky shops, historic buildings, and a variety of charming cafés and restaurants. Next, we make our way to All Saints Street, the oldest part of the town, known for its beautifully preserved medieval homes.
From there, we head to the West Hill Lift, one of Britain’s oldest funicular railways. This short but scenic ride takes us up to West Hill, where we are greeted by breathtaking panoramic views of the Old Town, the beach, and the English Channel.
At the top of the hill, we visit the iconic Hastings Castle, the first Norman castle in England. Built by William the Conqueror in 1067 following the Battle of Hastings, the castle ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the town’s medieval past, along with stunning views from its cliffside location.
After exploring the castle, we walk a few minutes west across the hilltop to the entrance of St. Clement’s Caves, home to the Smugglers Adventure. Here, we journey through dimly lit tunnels once used by real smugglers, brought to life with interactive exhibits, atmospheric sound effects, and stories of coastal piracy.
Following our cave exploration, we return to the West Hill Lift and descend back into the Old Town. Our final stop is the Blue Reef Aquarium, where we walk through an underwater tunnel surrounded by tropical fish, sharks, and rays. We also enjoy hands-on exhibits in the rockpools, see seahorses and octopuses up close, and catch the aquarium’s scheduled feeding times.
After such a fantastic and fun-filled day, we head back to Eastbourne, taking with us wonderful memories of our adventure in Hastings.
